DIABETES UK is calling on Clackmannanshire fundraisers to join its team and take on the Swim 22 challenge.

Taking place between February 22 and March 22, participants are challenged to swim 22 miles - the equivalent of swimming the English Channel – to raise funds for the charity.

Swimmers have three months to swim 22 miles in their local pool, either by themselves or by splitting the distance with teammates.

Participants are encouraged to get sponsorship so that every length completed will help fund research into new treatments, techniques and Diabetes UK’s search for a cure. Money raised will also fund campaigns which secure better care and support for people with diabetes to live well.

Linda Hamilton, Diabetes UK fundraiser for central Scotland, said: “Swim22 is perfect for anyone who wants to challenge themselves to get fitter and to keep physically active. The three-month timeframe means that whatever your fitness level there’s plenty of time to get in the pool and complete the challenge - you can even split the distance with teammates if that feels more manageable.

“Diabetes is a serious condition which can led to life-limiting complications if people are not supported to manage it well. Funds raised through Swim 22 will enable us to continue to support people living with diabetes and also continue to fund research towards better understanding and treatment of diabetes.

"We hope that lots of people will join us for Swim 22 and help us work towards a world where diabetes can do no harm.

“Whether taking part as a solo swimmer or as part of a school, club or team, it’s time to get your goggles on and go to great lengths for people with diabetes."

Across Scotland over 280,000 people are living with diabetes. It’s a serious condition which requires careful management every day to avoid developing complications including sight loss, kidney disease, stroke and cardiovascular disease.

When you sign up you’ll receive a Swim22 pack through the post. This includes swimming tips, how to get your fundraising started and, of course, your very own Swim22 swimming hat.

You will also receive an email giving you access to your very own Swim22 page, where you can track the distance covered, collect milestone swimming badges and share your progress with everyone.

There is no closing date, so you can sign up anytime so long as you complete the challenge between February 22 and May 22.
