THOSE with a love for local wildlife and history will have the chance to explore both next weekend.

The team at RSPB Scotland Black Devon Wetlands is working with Historic Environment Scotland to showcase the landscape and history at the nature reserve and its links with Clackmannan Tower.

The free guided 'Wetland Wander' is taking place on Sunday, July 9, between 12.30pm and 4pm.

People will have the chance to discover the diverse history of the site while taking in the wildlife.

The tour will then venture up to Clackmannan Tower where those heading along can find more out about the story of the 14th century building.

Ami Kirkbright, RSPB Scotland Futurescapes assistant for the Inner Forth, said: “RSPB Scotland Black Devon Wetlands is now a haven for wildlife, but this site also hides some remarkable secrets about its past which on first glance aren’t obvious.

“Clackmannan Tower is an amazing landmark and focal point from the reserve, and Historic Environment Scotland has been so generous to open its doors for this event.

“It’s a rare chance to see inside the tower itself. I’m so lucky to work on a reserve that not only has diverse wildlife, but also a fascinating history, and I’m excited to share it with those who would like to come along.”

Access to and the experience at the wetlands has been improved in past months with a viewing screen, boardwalks and pools, thanks to an Inner Forth Landscape Initiative (IFLI) project.

Another IFLI programme made the tower more accessible to visitors, allowing Historic environment Scotland to open it more frequently.

As places are limited, booking in advance is advisable. Email innerforthreserves@rspb.org.uk for more information and to secure a place.
