ALLOA'S High Street is amongst the most beautiful shopping strips in Scotland and is now needing votes from the public to take the top spot in a contest.

A panel from Scotland's Towns Partnership and Keep Scotland Beautiful have drawn up a list of 10 finalists in their competition as they embarked to find the prettiest and best in the country with the Sunday Herald.

It is now up to the public to cast their votes online – the local High Street is up against strips in Banff, Elgin, Falkirk, Forres, Fort William, Haddington, Lanark, Moffat and Troon.

According to the entry, Alloa High Street made the shortlist thanks to its transformation over the past decade.

Part of it was the creation of the performance area, the restoration of the clock which was part of the original Co-op building, Andy Scott's Mirror Men sculptures and the flower barrels and hanging baskets.

Lorraine Douglas, manager of Alloa Town Centre Business Improvement District ATCBID which was one of the driving forces behind a number of initiatives.

She said: “ATCBID are delighted at making the final shortlist of 10 in the Most Beautiful High Street Competition.

“Alloa’s High Street has been transformed over the past nine years, this has been driven by the Alloa Town Centre Business Improvement District (ATCBID), Clackmannanshire Council and funding from the Scottish Government.

“Our town may be small, but our High Street is packed with an array of heritage, art and a wide variety of traders.”

The public vote is open until October 1 and the winner will be announced at the Scotland's Town Conference in Paisley later in November.
