THE Wee County stood up to cancer last week with fun physical activities to raise money and fund research into a cure.

Clackmannanshire Council's Sports Development Team was supporting Cancer Research UK and the Stand Up to Cancer campaign with the Tesco 10 Bay Challenge.

The supermarket in Alloa kindly offered space in its car park to host 10 different exercises, which passers by were encouraged to take part in.

There was football with a bit of dribbling and a shot at goal, a test of field hockey skills, a small trampoline and much more.

At the same time, the neighbouring Kilncraigs council headquarters also hosted activities for staff.

Kenny Cook, active community officer with Clackmannanshire Council's Sports Development Team, told the Advertiser: “One of the priorities is promoting the physical activities that we deliver in Clackmannanshire through the adult classes in the Active Communities Programme.

“We are asking people to get involved in a bit of activity – it's just fun games here in the car park.

“Inside Kilncraigs we've got a treadmill, a rowing machine and a bike. People can either do a mile on one of them or they can do a triathlon.

“We are also promoting how physical activity can help prevent cancer, or if people do have cancer it can help them recover.”

Those taking part had the chance to enter a competition to see who can get the highest numbers in the car park or the longest distances within the council building.

Kenny added: “We've had a good response from council employees; they've been really good; donated a lot; and got involved with the activities.”

He also said that over-50s classes organised and delivered by the team are popular with the older generation these days, while yoga classes are the top choice for others.

This was the second time Kenny and the team organised the event and with dozens of people involved and having a “good laugh” on the day, he is hoping to turn it into an annual occasion.

He thanked Tesco for providing the space and offering some prizes for the competition.

The Sports Development Team started a partnership with Cancer Research UK last year and managed to raise around £11,000.
