CLACKMANNANSHIRE will be joining millions of people from around the world for Earth Hour this weekend.

As part of the popular movement, organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), three Wee County landmarks will go dark for one hour tomorrow (Saturday, March 24).

They will include Clackmannanshire Council's Kilncraigs headquarters, the Speirs Centre and Alloa Town Hall – with all non-essential lights switched off for the occasion at 8.30pm.

Earth Hour aims to highlight the issues facing the planet and humanity.

Councillor Craig Holden, the SNP administration's environment spokesperson, said: “We are pleased to take part in WWF's Earth Hour and are proud to be involved with this awareness raising event.

“Everyone can make a difference to help protect our planet and we all have a key role to play.

“Earth Hour is our opportunity in Clackmannanshire to show world leaders that robust action to tackle climate change is urgently needed."

WWF Scotland acting director Sam Gardner added: “We’re delighted that Clackmannanshire Council is taking part in WWF’s Earth Hour.

“It’s an opportunity for us all to demonstrate in a simple way that we care about our planet and the impact climate change is having on people and nature across the world.

“With one in six of the world’s species at risk of extinction from climate change, there has never been a more important time to call for action.”
