WEE COUNTY fundraisers are part of a team of 14 who are currently trekking across a desert, raising funds for research after a friend was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND).

Margaret Filshie and John Logan, owners of the Blairmains Farm Shop and Coffee Bothy, are raising funds for MND research after family friend Andrew Mitchell was diagnosed with the illness last year.

They are part of a larger team of close friends and relatives who are currently hiking across the Kalahari Desert in Namibia, led by former SAS Major Ken Hames.

Rounding off a range of recent fundraisers, the 160-mile expedition will take 12 days altogether and is raising sponsorship money for the Andrew Mitchell Research Fund, which directly benefits the Euan MacDonald Centre for Motor Neurone Disease Research.

Earlier in the summer, the farm shop in Blairlogie attracted 200 people to a charity event in support of the research centre as well as Alzheimer Scotland, raising a whopping £20,000 in one single evening.

Guests were invited to a marquee specially erected for the event, to take part in a charity auction with entertainment provided by “pipe band of a thousand names” The Gutty Slippers, also known as The Pokey Hats.

Cash from ticket sales and the auction went to the charities with organisers Margaret, John and the Logan clan absorbing the hard costs to maximise donations.
