MORE than 4000 people turned out to celebrate the 161st Famous Alva Games at the weekend.

The crowd that flocked to Johnstone Park was even bigger than the year before, with visitors coming in from Clackmannanshire and further afield.

Games secretary Craig Dunbar, who has been involved for 22 years, gave the event high praise.

He said: "That is now my best one. It was just so right on so many levels."

Held on Saturday, July 8, it was packed full of traditional activities such as athletics, cycling, highland dancing and heavy weights.

As with every year, the event proved popular with tourists who came from far and wide to take part.

Crowning glory of the day was the gruelling hill race run over Torry.

Coming in the coveted top spot was Ted Mason, who also won it in 2014, followed by Ben Mounsey in second and Ben Procter in third.

There was a staggering 84 people signed up to participate and there were a good number of entrants in all the contests on the day.

Craig said: "We had 10 bikes going round the track which was the best it's been for a few years."

And those watching on and supporting the competitors throughout the day added to the occasion – rising to their feet, clapping and cheering – as did a surprisingly dry day.

Craig added: "The crowd was just, they were fantastic – the responsiveness of the audience at Alva is always brilliant.

"It was just a fantastic day and it made up for the fact that we have had a few damp finishes over the years."

Guest of honour for 2017 was Bert Hutchison, attending along with his wife Andrena, known for his running triumphs at home and abroad.

Making their debut were three newly-purchased trophies, named after Bert, Tom Sedgwick and William McFarlane who were all present to hand them over.

According to Craig, the first highlight for him was seeing Greg Kelly win the 90m open and the second was Ted securing the hill race trophy.

He added: "Third, just the sheer enjoyment of people who came along to join in.

"For me, there's no point doing it if nobody comes."

The 162nd Famous Alva Games will take place on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 12.30pm
