Success of Clackmannanshire Bridge campaign

FOR the best part of two years, the Alloa & Hillfoots Advertiser has been referring to the Upper Forth Crossing as the Clackmannanshire Bridge – and now, at last, it’s official. Clackmannanshire Council, Ochil MSP Keith Brown and the Alloa & Hillfoots Advertiser all launched a joint campaign to promote the name Clackmannanshire Bridge.

Emergency services slam hoax caller

A TEENAGER who made hoax calls to the police and fire brigade could have cost lives, say the emergency services. Alan Milne (17), of Gartmorn Road, Sauchie, appeared at Alloa Sheriff Court on Thursday and pled guilty to phoning 999 and falsely reporting incidents of fire raising and vandalism.

Repairs carried out to Clackmannanshire Bridge

FEARS over the safety of the Clackmannanshire Bridge after a large crack appeared in one of the supporting legs have been eased by Transport Scotland. A wide hole was left after a steel shutter was removed from the concrete support.

Council faces cash crisis after £1m overspend

CLACKMANNANSHIRE Council could be hit with a cash crisis as its estimated reserve fund falls to £60,000, below the recommended sum of £1.8 million. Officials warn that a projected overspend of £1.008m by the council this year will “effectively eliminate the accumulated un-earmarked reserve”.

Four-figure sum stolen from Clackmannan pub

A FOUR-FIGURE sum of money has been stolen from a Clackmannan pub only a few months after it reopened. The money was taken from the County Bar in Clackmannan’s Main Street between 12.10am and 10.30am on Thursday.

Council staff call off strike

THIS week’s planned strike by Clackmannanshire Council call centre workers has been cancelled after a new pay offer was made. Certain staff had been due to walk out from Tuesday to Friday over pay. However, they will now attend work as normal whilst trade unions discuss the latest offer.

Former Forefronters return for cabaret night

FORMER members of Forefront Children’s Theatre helped the performing arts group pull in thousands of pounds in funds at their cabaret. Over Thursday and Friday night, the Alloa Town Hall was alive with the sound of music and dance by Forefront in Harmony, as capacity audiences were treated to excerpts from High School Musical and Let Me Entertain You.

Fight against flu begins with a jab

THE annual fight against flu is being launched in Clackmannanshire as NHS Forth Valley begins its 2008/09 immunisation programme. Around 66,000 doses of the flu vaccine have been ordered for the community, with everyone over the age of 65 eligible for the jab, along with those under 65 who are considered to be in the ‘at risk’ group.

A PARTNERSHIP between Clackmannanshire and Nova Scotia in Canada could bring lasting benefits both culturally and economically. SNP Councillor Donald Balsillie believes there are opportunities to forge links across the Atlantic, particularly using new technology such as the internet.

Tributes paid to big-hearted Alloa Rotarian

TRIBUTES have been paid to a big-hearted Alloa Rotarian and pioneering businessman who helped raise thousands of pounds for good causes throughout the Wee County and beyond. Bob Garrard (64), an “adopted Scot” after making his home in Alloa, sadly died on Friday night, shortly after attending a dinner to promote local business.

PROGRESSING from X-Factor’s boot camp proved to be a step too far for Glenochil Prison officer and singing sensation Kirsty Docherty. The Clackmannanshire diva made it through to the final group of 70 from 182,000 entrants, in the ITV show which unearths singing talent, before being knocked out.
