Teenager prepares for second mission
By Tracey Bryce
Carys Williamson is preapring to undertake a second charity mission.
CARYS Williamson may only be 16, but she has a huge heart.
And the Dollar teenager will prove it later this month, as she heads off for training in preparation for her second charity mission.
As previously reported in the Advertiser, Carys took a big step last summer when she jetted off to Rwanda on a three-week mission to help locals in the small town of Kingali set up child-headed families and a hospice for people suffering from AIDS.
And she was so inspired by the trip that she’s decided to do more missionary work.
Next month, Carys will travel to Wales where she will spend three months training with the World Horizons charity, learning about different languages and culture.
Then in December, the former Dollar Academy pupil will jet off for six months on a charity mission.
Although initially Carys hoped she would be working in India, the trust has decided she is not old enough to travel that far, so she’ll have to settle for somewhere in the UK or Europe instead.
No matter where she is posted though, Carys is looking forward to it.
“I’m really excited and looking forward to it, no matter where I end up,” she said. “The logical option would be France though, as I have just completed Higher French.”
With the training set to cost £2000, Carys has had a hard summer raising the cash.
But a fundraising ceilidh in Dollar Civic Centre proved the icing on the cake by collecting the extra £600 she needed.
“The ceilidh raised over £630, which is great,” she said. “I now have enough to pay for my training and carry me through to December, but the placement is another £2000-£3000 so I’ll have to try and raise some more money before I go.”
