Clackmannanshire still tops the recycling league
By Jamie MacDonald
THE Wee County has once again been named as Scotland’s top recycling authority.
Figures for 2006 reveal Clackmannanshire is out in front with 42.6 per cent of waste recycled.
Nationally 27.1 per cent of waste was recycled instead of being sent to landfill.
Clackmannanshire saw a three per cent rise in recycling compared to 2005, although the total waste produced did go up by one per cent. The increase in waste could, however, be explained by the increase in homes built in the past year.
Graeme the council’s waste services manager, said, “The results are great news and it is down to more and more people taking part.
“We’ve run an awareness campaign and people are more aware of things like climate change and the use of landfill sites, which produce methane.
“A good example is glass recycling which goes straight to the glassworks, instead of travelling in a lorry for miles to the landfill.”
Graeme added, “We will soon be concentrating on waste minimisation and smart buying. Not only is it good for the environment but it will help people save money.”
