Tullibody's new park 'slides' into action
By Jamie MacDonald
Youngsters test out their new play equipment.
CHILDREN in Tullibody had a great time at the opening of their new park on Stirling Road – showing those who tried to ruin the play area that they will not spoil the youngsters’ fun.
Last week the Advertiser reported that vandals had defaced the new park before it had even opened but on Wednesday children were too busy having a great time to pay any notice.
Once the broken glass – left by those hoping to scupper the day – had been swept away the children were delighted to try out the new chute, roundabout, climbing frame and all the other activities available in the park.
Jack Hardman, chairperson for Lower Tullibody West Residents’ Association, said, “We are really quite pleased with it – it ticks all the boxes. You won’t see anything else like this park around here, it’s state-of-the-art and is completely different to the usual swing park.
“It is all pretty sturdy equipment and the surface is made up of recycled old Nike trainers.”
The park is part of the new housing development by Carronvale Homes and local children were involved during the design stage. The youngsters travelled to Hamilton to choose the types of equipment they wanted to see in the park.
Many of the activities available in the facility are suitable for disabled children and toddlers.
Local mum, Debbie Leckie, was almost as pleased to see the park opening as her three children – Sheree, Ayden and Keirran – were.
Debbie said, “It is good for the kids to have a park down here. They’ve watched it being built and couldn’t wait for it to open.”
The chute was proving especially popular with the children and its double slide means that a parent can slide down one side supporting a young child in the other who might normally be too small for the chute.
Lynn Hiddleston and Cheryl McLean from Tullibody’s Healthy Living Initiative were on-hand at the opening to provide free fruit to the children.
Lynn said, “It is really good to get kids into the park and to encourage them to be active.
“This outdoor facility is important as there isn’t anything else for them on this side of Tullibody – they would have to cross three roads to get to the public park.”
