Brief reprieve for county's Post Offices
By Alloa News Room
POST offices in Clackmannanshire have been given a temporary reprieve amid a major programme of branch closures across Scotland.
The Wee County’s ten Post Office branches, and one in Kincardine, are safe – until next year when an announcement of which local branches are earmarked for closure is made.
This week, the Post Office Ltd announced a series of planned closures for the Argyll and Bute, Central Scotland and Greater Glasgow areas.
The 44 closures, which include branches in Stirling, Denny and Callander, are the first instalment of six regional cuts across Scotland which, campaigners claim, may lead to the loss of hundreds of urban and rural branches.
But a decision on long-term plans for the Wee County and Kincardine’s Post Office provision won’t be taken until 2008.
Although it was expected that Clackmannanshire would fall under the Central Scotland belt, Post Office Ltd has split Scotland up into six area plans using Westminster constituencies, meaning that the county falls under Edinburgh, the Lothians and the South, which won’t be considered until next year.
Kincardine Post Office, which comes under the Fife area plan, also won’t learn its fate until April when a further closure list is expected.
Post Office Ltd has been forced to close up to 2500 branches throughout the UK as part of a Government requirement due to mounting financial losses and falling customer numbers.
