Sauchie phones cut off
By Jamie MacDonald
HOUSEHOLDERS in Sauchie have been struggling to ‘phone a friend’ because of a major telephone problem.
A fortnight ago, 1400 homes were cut off following a water leak into the cable that connects the town.
Since then, engineers have gradually restored the service and they expect the fault to be completely resolved this week.
Provost Derek Stewart is amongst the residents to be affected by the fault.
He said, “It has been absolutely diabolical and it is affecting businesses too.
“Every time you contact BT you are told it is a technical problem and it is in the process of being repaired, but you never get to speak to the same person twice or find out exactly what is happening.
“I would like to know if BT will be compensating people that are paying their line rental but not getting any services.”
One elderly Sauchie resident contacted the Advertiser office to complain about her phone being off.
We contacted BT and she phoned the office within minutes to say she had been reconnected.
A spokesperson for BT said, “A major underground cable serving around 1400 customers in Sauchie was damaged by water around two weeks ago.
“Openreach engineers dried out the cable and reconnected most of the affected customers within a couple of days. Repairs to the remaining lines have taken longer to complete because of very restricted access to the damaged area and we’d like to apologise for this break in service.
“We expect the last 30 faults to be cleared today and tomorrow.
“Customers who reported faults on their lines were given the opportunity to have their incoming calls diverted free of charge to their mobiles or another fixed line of their choice.”
