THE sounds of music from across the globe flowed from Lornshill Academy last week, as the school staged its first World Music Day concert.
Bagpipes, Bob Marley and the Bay City Rollers mixed with samba beats, traditional folk music and songs and instruments originating from as far afield as China, proved the perfect recipe for a night of magnificent musical entertainment at the ‘Scotland Meets the Rest of the World’ gig on Thursday.
The concert, which combined St Andrew’s Day celebrations with an opportunity for pupils to showcase their varied musical talents, was the brainchild of Lornshill Academy’s Head of Music and Drama, Katie Wylie.
As well as a performance of Scottish patriotic pop songs given by the school’s 65-strong choir, the audience was treated to pieces played on the bagpipes and the Chinese ‘pipa’ and a performance of a German song.
Venezuelan exchange pupil Greta Yepez sang Bendita Eres and the school’s samba band and folk group also took to the stage during the event.
Katie was delighted to report that the concert was a huge success.
She told the Advertiser, “It went very well. There was a lot of variety and some excellent performances. The audience certainly seemed to enjoy it as well.
“We’re already planning a similar event for next year because the concert was such a success.”
It is expected that proceeds from the concert will be used to buy new musical instruments for Lornshill Academy, with a proportion of the cash being donated to Unicef.
