ACE bridge player Jean Mackie celebrated her 80th birthday with a full house of friends at Alloa Golf Club.

More than 50 fellow players from clubs in Clackmannanshire and Stirlingshire toasted the grand old lady of bridge – who is a teacher of the game as well as a respected player – at the birthday lunch.

Jean, who plays with partner Sandra Hopkins at Alva Bridge Club, as well as other clubs in the county and in Stirling, shared the limelight with Stewart Anderson, of Stirling, who also celebrated his 80th birthday.

And it was three of a kind with their fellow player Kath Wilson, also of Stirling, enjoying her 80th birthday at a separate celebration on the day.

Harvey Milne, former chairman of both the bridge clubs in Stirling, told the Advertiser, “It was a lovely occasion. We had two birthday cakes and the Four in a Bar barbershop singers provided the entertainment.”

He added that bridge was a very popular pastime, relatively inexpensive to participate in, and very sociable.

And there seems little doubt that the game can keep you young – Flora Macdougall, who also plays at Alva Bridge Club celebrated her 90th birthday last year.

Sandra Hopkins is keen to keep membership numbers healthy at the Alva club and would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in joining – call 01259 214963 for more information.
