Firefighter Killed in road accident

POLICE are currently dealing with a fatal road collision outside Tillicoultry involving an emergency vehicle.

A fire engine responding to an emergency call left the road and one fire officer has died as a result.

Three others are injured – one has suffered serious injuries. A fifth was believed to be uninjured.

A Central Scotland Police spokeswoman said, `The A91 from Tillicoultry to Dollar is closed and is likely to remain closed for a considerable period of time.

`No other vehicle was involved.`

A full road collision investigation will be conducted and further updates regarding road closures will be released when appropriate.

Central Scotland Fire and Rescue said they confirmed one of their appliances had been involved in a fatal collision around 1.30pm.

A spokesman added, `We are shocked and our thoughts are with the crew and their families. We cannot comment any further at this time.`

Central Scotland Fire and Rescue Service released the following statement on its website this afternoon:

Central Scotland Fire and Rescue Service can confirm that at 13:30 today (23rd January) a fire engine attending an emergency call to Strathdevon Primary School, Dollar was involved in a fatal collision outside Tillicoultry.

The fire engine had a crew of five and as result of the collision one firefighter has died, one has been seriously injured, three others have also been injured. The most serious of the injured has been air lifted to the Southern General Hospital, Glasgow.

Firefighters from another station were immediately mobilised to the scene and had the harrowing task of extricating casualties from the wreckage. The crews carried this out in a professional manner in extremely difficult conditions.

Chief Fire Officer Steven Torrie says, “Central Scotland Fire and Rescue Service is a small Service and a close-knit community and we are all absolutely devastated by this loss and extremely concerned about our injured colleagues. The thoughts of every single member of this Service are with the firefighter’s family and the families of our injured colleagues, this is a tragic day for our Service.

The Service is co-operating with the full investigation which is being conducted by Central Scotland Police road policing unit.
