Council leader Janet Cadenhead welcomed the Council Tax freeze.

CLACKMANNANSHIRE Council has frozen council tax for 2008/09 at 2007/08 levels.

Water and sewerage charges, which are set by Scottish Water, will increase by 3.74 per cent. Residents in a band D property will continue pay £1148 a year in council tax. Their water and sewerage charge will be £379.53.

The Council has received £648,000 from the Scottish government in return for the council tax freeze.

Combined with savings made across council services, the Labour adminiostration says this will allow more money to be spent on:

Child protection services, with the provision of two extra social workers;

Looking after children in care;

More care for older people; and

Specialist care for people with autism and learning disabilities.

Overall, nearly £5.5 million more will be spent on services this year.

Savings will be made as the council reviews its asset management and leisure services. Council staff will also be reduced over time as temporary contracts come to an end and vacant positions are not filled.

Charges for some adult personal care and respite care services will be brought in line with charges made by other authorities.

Council Leader Janet Cadenhead, said, “With this tight budget, we are redistributing spending to the areas where it is most needed. I’m confident that our dedicated staff will continue to provide high quality services.

“Over the next three years, we expect to realise some savings from the asset management review, putting these to good use in regeneration projects and in Alloa town centre.”

Further detailed coverage of Clackmannanshire's budget will be included in the next edition of the Alloa & Hillfoots Advertiser.
