THE house sparrow remains the most common feathered visitor to gardens in Clackmannanshire, according to new figures released by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) Scotland.

A total of 191 Wee County residents took part in the charity’s annual Big Garden Bird Watch (BGBW), with just under 27,000 birdwatchers taking part throughout Scotland.

In Clackmannanshire, the house sparrow was spotted in 64.6 per cent of gardens, with an average of 5.15 birds per garden.

Top five

The chaffinch, starling, blackbird and blue tit also made the top five in the county.

New entries to the top 10 birds in Clackmannanshire gardens for 2008 included the goldfinch and migratory siskin, while the robin and the collared dove dropped out.

Across Scotland, the chaffinch once again emerged as the top garden bird. Second and third places were again taken by the house sparrow and starling.

The surprising new entry into the top ten of the migratory siskin is in keeping the UK-wide BGBW results, with other migratory finches like redpoll, goldfinch and brambling on the increase.

RSPB Scotland’s Big Garden Bird Watch organiser Jonathan Osborne said, “It’s fantastic that so many people in Clackmannanshire, and indeed across Scotland, again helped us complete the biggest garden bird survey on the planet.

Enjoyable

“I’m sure everyone that took part realised just how enjoyable it is to appreciate wildlife on their own doorstep, and we hope that people will make this part of their lives by turning their garden into a home for wildlife.”

The full UK-wide Big Garden Birdwatch results are available on the RSPB website by visiting www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch.

Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of Big Garden Birdwatch and will take place on 24-25 January 2009.
