Clackmannanshire applications have risen to 485 this year.

APPLICATIONS for courses at Forth Valley College’s Clackmannan Campus have more than doubled since last year.

In particular, young people in Clackmannanshire are showing their caring side by applying in their dozens for the college’s nursing and childcare courses.

This time last year, Forth Valley College had received a total of 210 applications for courses at its Clackmannan Campus in Alloa.

A year on and the number of Clackmannanshire applications has risen to 485 as the college begins recruiting its next batch of students.

Associate principal Elaine Petrie told the Advertiser, “The increased number of applications is very encouraging as it shows young people are planning ahead.

“We are delighted that more and more young people view college as their preferred option once they leave school.

“We’re proud of the diverse range of courses we offer.

“Among the courses available in Alloa are office skills, accounting, social sciences, computing and engineering.

“As well as business and technology-related subjects we have courses in care, art and design, hairdressing, beauty therapy and even landscaping, so we really feel we have something here for everyone.

“Last year 308 new students enrolled at the Clackmannan campus and we hope to improve on that for the coming year.”

The access to nursing, classroom assistant and early education and childcare courses are proving particularly popular, along with courses in carpentry and joinery and construction craft skills, and motor vehicle maintenance. The SVQ in hairdressing is also filling up quickly.

Some courses, such as the college’s Higher National Diploma in beauty therapy are filling more slowly, so there are still plenty of options for those who haven’t made their minds up yet.

Potential students still have time to apply for their chosen courses before the next academic year starts in August.
