Oran has been bought by Response Group.

WORKERS at Cambus-based waste management company Oran have been assured there is no immediate threat to their jobs following the company’s purchase by Response Group.

Response is one of Ireland’s leading water and wastewater treatment companies and has taken on 100 per cent ownership of Oran.

In recent weeks Oran had announced job cuts in the area with, it is believed, 25 local delivery drivers being made redundant along with a number of office staff.

However, a spokesperson for Response told the Advertiser there were no plans to make any further job cuts.

The spokesperson said, “There has been no discussions at this stage. It will take time for things to settle but there will be no immediate impact on jobs.

“It is a great opportunity to grow the business and is a positive thing.”

Response operates in both the public and private sector of the water industry, with a strong record in design, construction and operation of treatment plants and operating facilities.

Oran is involved in delivering environmental solutions, including dry waste material recovery and recycling, water and waste water treatment and disposal, along with the beneficial recycling of organic waste materials.

Noel Hanley, chairman of Response Group, said, “This is an extremely positive step for the Response Group and Oran Waste UK Ltd, providing an exciting milestone in the development of both companies and the group.

“The acquisition marks an important addition to the Response Group’s existing business portfolio, whilst providing Oran Waste UK Ltd with improved resources including industry experience and expertise and financial resources.

“Our corporate development plan also includes a pipeline of other potential strategic international opportunities in the making.”

The transaction will give the group a combined revenue of approximately £78 million making it one of the largest privately owned operations of its kind in the UK or Ireland.

In last week’s Advertiser Oran advised that there may be job cuts – refusing to be drawn on how many – and part of the company’s Midtown Business Park was for sale.

Redundant workers contacted the Advertiser to say the threat of job cuts had already become a reality, and those affected had been informed of this back on 11 April.

One former Oran lorry driver said that the company appeared to be keen to wipe out the Scottish “night out” drivers – those that travel to England for two weeks at a time to work from Oran’s Leicester base.

The former Oran lorry driver said, “They said it was for company restructuring, but what they are doing is wiping out all the Scottish ‘night out’ workers.

“People have been working there for nearly 13 years and they don’t take that into account.

“On their website they are advertising for more drivers – how can they make us redundant and offer the jobs out?

“If they’ve made us redundant there shouldn’t be any vacancies to fill.

“They go on about keeping the work in the county – but they are not.”
