Jenny Huxtable awaits another major milestone in her life – motherhood.

A KINCARDINE student has overcome her lack of hearing to begin building her career in hairdressing.

And Jenny Huxtable (22), who graduated from the Adam Smith College’s SVQ Hairdressing, has another major milestone in her life awaiting her later this year as she is looking forward to becoming a mum.

Jenny, who has used sign language from the age of six, first discovered her natural talent for hairdressing after styling, colouring and cutting hair for friends and close family.

She decided to enrol on SVQ Hairdressing at the Kirkcaldy-based Adam Smith College to formalise her training and gain the skills to become a qualified hairdresser.

Jenny said, “I found the hairdressing course helped me develop my people skills along with my professional skills.

“The college salon displayed some basic sign language diagrams for customers who wanted to communicate with me, but signing is not an easy skill to pick up so I mostly read the clients lips.

“Although one of my greatest barriers in the job is communication, I often find the hearing impairment helps me to stay focused on the job in hand and not become distracted by all the activity going on in a busy salon atmosphere.”

The college helped Jenny overcome her barriers to education by providing communication support and a scribe, with some of her tutors completing the British Sign Language (BSL) course to communicate with her via sign language.

Jenny said she enjoyed her experience at Adam Smith and urged new students with a disability to contact student support as she found the assistance enormously beneficial and helped her with both written and practical work.

Ina Hannah, curriculum head for hair, beauty and holistic therapies at Adam Smith College, said, “Jenny has shown tremendous determination during her time at the college. She always applied herself to the task at hand even though it must have been tricky for her at times.

“Having seen her work she is a very skilled hairdresser with natural flair for the job and I am sure she will be a welcome addition to the hairdressing industry.”
