Car could have burst into flames at any time
By Hamish Hutchinson
The burnt out remains of the car.
A WOMAN refused to trade her car in for a newer model only days before the engine went up in flames.
Wilma Beveridge (61) had been more than happy driving around her Vauxhall Corsa for the past five years.
On Sunday she cheered on her daughter who was competing in Race for Life in Falkirk before driving back to her home in Kincardine’s Ramsey Lane.
There her husband Allan (66) decided to take advantage of the sunshine and washed and polished her vehicle and his own in the car park. Little did he know that in less than 24 hours it would be up in flames.
Wilma said, “I parked the car there about 2pm on Sunday after I came home from Falkirk. Allan washed and polished it on the Sunday afternoon leaving both cars sitting there absolutely sparkling.
“The next thing is on Monday afternoon I hear a loud banging at the front door. One of the neighbours opened up and told me my car was on fire. It had just burst into flames.”
Wilma called the fire brigade and alerted the neighbours to help move the surrounding vehicles away from the burning car.
Allan was out for a stroll at the time when he got the call from a distressed Wilma telling him her car was up in smoke.
When he returned home at around 1.40pm firefighters from Alloa and Dunfermline were already at the scene hosing down the flames.
Wilma, a Sunday school teacher said, “It’s funny because I’ve never had a bit of bother with the car since I got it. I was at a garage last week and they were trying to sell me a car. I told them, no, no, I don’t want a new car, I like my car and now this has happened.
“It’s scary as I had my grand-daughter in it for the four days before and the fireman said if it was an electrical fault it could have done it at any time.”
