STRATHCARRON Hospice is aiming to bridge the gap in its funding programme by inviting supporters to take part in a sponsored walk across the new ‘Clackmannanshire Bridge’.

Those signing up for the venture will be among the first to walk over the bridge – still currently known only as the Upper Forth Crossing – a few days before its opening in November – with Strathcarron Hospice the only charity to clinch such a deal.

Angela Gillies, the hospice’s fundraising manager, is delighted that her efforts to organise the exciting sponsored event have paid off.

She said, “We are really looking forward to the walk which will provisionally take place on Sunday 2 November, just a few days before the official opening.

“We will be leaving from the Kincardine side of the River Forth to walk across and back, between 10am and 3pm.”

Angela added that the event will be fully supervised and that children taking part must be accompanied by an adult. Arrangements to park cars at Tulliallan Police College are being finalised so participants will only have a short walk through Kincardine village to the new bridge.

Each walker will need to secure a minimum sponsorship of £30 to take part. In return they will be given a commemorative t-shirt and a commemorative medal when they finish.

The proceeds of the charity event will help to fund Strathcarron’s Hospice’s newly introduced children’s bereavement service which helps young people deal with the death of a loved one.

Anyone wanting to take part in the walk can telephone 01324 826222 for a sponsorship form, or just turn up to register on the day.

“We are hoping to get a good response to our latest appeal,” said Angela. “It is a unique chance to be among the first people to walk over the new bridge and raise much-need cash for Strathcarron.

“We need £50,000 a week to keep the hospice running and help the 900 patients we look after every year.”

Strathcarron’s busy fundraising programme also includes the annual Challenge Day at the Scottish Police College at Tulliallan on Sunday 24 August.

Twelve teams have entered the inter service/company challenge to compete in a variety of disciplines, including driving agility, archery, assault course and tug of war.

Contenders pitting their skills against each other include teams from the Fire Service, Army staff, Longannet Power Station, Scottish Police College, schools, businesses, and Cornton Vale Prison.

Team supporters will be able to enjoy the accompanying family fun day which will feature stalls, dog agility, a barbecue, face painting, a giant slide, a climbing wall and more,

Entry to the event, which starts at 1pm with free parking, is by donation and all proceeds will benefit Strathcrron Hospice.

On Sunday 19 October, Strathcarron Hospice is hosting a fundraising lunch with Tricia Stewart – one of the original Calendar Girls, Miss October – as guest speaker.

The lunch will be held in the Westerwood Hotel, Cumbernauld, starting at 12.30pm. For tickets, priced £35, contact the hospice.
