AFTER years of working for night club owners across Scotland, DJs Paul Kerr and Don Robertson have decided to play them at their own game.
The pair have transformed the former derelict ‘Nighthawks’ building in Alloa town centre into the county’s newest dance venue – Klub 21.
And clubbers will be able to see and experience the change for themselves tomorrow (Friday) night when the club officially opens its doors.
Paul, who lives in Alloa, told the Advertiser, “I’ve always thought the best person to run a nightclub is a DJ as they are the ones who know what’s going on and are always monitoring the crowd.
“Don and I have both worked in pubs and clubs up and down the country and we felt we’d reached the point where we could take all our experience and open our own place.”
The name ‘Klub 21’ refers to the club’s own address in the town – 21 Mill Street – and it was in that very building that Paul spent much of his early DJing career.
He said, “I used to DJ in Alloa ages ago when it was Nighthawks and so did Don, so to be opening up Klub 21 at the same premises is something of a homecoming, bringing us back to where we first started.”
The interior has been completely overhauled from its original layout and now has more toilets, two downstairs bars and an upstairs “chill out” seated area.
But its not just cosmetic changes the pair have made. As Paul says, he wants people to have a “safe night, a good night and a trouble free night”.
As such the club will be fitted out with CCTV, be staffed by fully-trained stewards and a strict door policy so anyone who is banned from pubs elsewhere in town may find themselves out in the cold at Klub 21 too.
Paul added, “Alloa has a cracking new bar – the Old Brewery – and we are hoping to match that with our club.
“Don and myself will be the main DJs at first but we are planning to bring in top named DJs like Lisa Littlewood.
“Because we have been around the circuit we’ve spoken to a few of the DJs who are up for coming through and doing a stint at the club.”
Klub 21 will initially open only on Fridays and Saturdays from 10pm to 2am and clubbers can expect a mixture of dance, chart and R&B as well as themed nights.
