CLACKMANNANSHIRE was pretty in pink at the weekend when women – and a few brave men – got together raising thousands of pounds for the Breast Cancer Campaign.
This year Breast Cancer Campaign is daring everyone in the UK to wear an item of pink and donate £2 each to the charity to help beat breast cancer.
Alloa’s Curves held a Girl’s Night In on Friday to raise awareness of breast cancer and hold pampering sessions with Reki and Indian Head massage from one of the members at Curves and neck massages and nail files and polishes courtesy of salon Body Matters.
There was also entertainment from students of Katie Arthur’s Dance Attack, and belly dancing demonstrations as well as a tombola and a raffle.
Curves manager Melanie Mitchell told the Advertiser, “It was a great night and we were really pleased that we got so much support.
“Although it was mostly members who came along they also brought their friends and everyone had a great time.
“As the main point of the night was to raise money for Breast Cancer Care and also to raise awareness of breast cancer, we had a DVD featuring Olivia-Newton-John and women were also able to buy the self breast exam aid, Liv Aid.”
The Old Brewery in Alloa also got tore into the event with Alloa salon Cabelo Arte doing sponsored leg and chest waxes and head shaves, which they expect will raise over £1000 for the Breast Cancer Campaign.
The charity is close to the salon’s heart as its co-owner Fiona Preston lost her mum to cancer six years ago.
She told the Advertiser, “It was a great night and the manager at The Old Brewery said he had never seen it so busy. My business partner Carol Ann Liddel and I are just delighted we managed to raise so much money as it is a charity close to my own heart.
“We are hoping to hold the event every year because we had such a good turnout and I would just like to thank everyone that came along and paid their sponsorship money.”
Several businesses also supported the event with Aldo’s, the coffee shop D’inisi and Glenview Cottage donating vouchers as raffle prizes.
And one of the brave volunteers for the head shave was Fiona’s husband, Gary Preston, who raised £400.
The salon will also raise money this Friday for Wear it Pink Day by donating a certain amount from each hair cut to the charity.
Whilst Alloa Town Hall held the ‘greatest girls night in ever’ with a cow-girls themed evening complete with a bucking bronco and an appearance from Toy Story’s Woody the cowboy.
The event raised £1800 and its organiser Barbara Speed was delighted with its success after she held a similar event last year.
“We had about 175 people at the event and almost everyone knew someone who had been affected by breast cancer so I was delighted it was such a good night. One of my friends was diagnosed with breast cancer last year but thankfully she is okay now,” Barbara told the Advertiser.
“We had a bucking bronco, a DJ and a karaoke and a raffle and I would like to thank all the businesses in Alloa that helped us with raffle prizes as everyone was so generous.”
Rhona McCallum salon also embraced everything pink raising nearly £200.
Rhona told the Advertiser, “Throughout October we held raffles had special offers and then on Thursday we finished it off by all dressing in pink and putting on a buffet with food and drink for customers all day to raise as much money as possible for breast cancer.
“We also sold jelly sweet ‘kisses’ for £1 to tie in with the limited edition pink GHD hair straighteners, which are called Kiss and also come with a lip gloss compact.
“This is something we do every year to tie in with whatever limited edition hair straightener GHD bring out and it proved as successful as ever.”
