WORK to prevent a repeat of the devastation caused by January’s flooding in Tillicoultry will begin next week.

Residents in Elistoun Drive had to be evacuated and Sterling Furniture suffered thousands of pounds worth of losses as the River Devon burst its banks.

Clackmannanshire Council commissioned a test and survey of the area and now plan to raise the mixed leisure route (the old railway line) by around one metre as a preventative measure.

The route will be raised over approximately 200m of its length and the level was determined by the predicted 1 in 200 year flood event, plus a 20 per cent allowance for climate change.

On top of this, the council is allowing an additional 600mm of freeboard.

Work will begin next week and the route will be raised to its final level before Christmas.

Minor works including fencing and landscaping will follow in the New Year.

Council officials say a “significant amount” of vegetation, including some trees, will be removed to ensure the effectiveness of the flood measures.

However, they add that trees will be preserved wherever possible and a replacement planning scheme will take place once construction works are finished.

Councillor Eddie Carrick, portfolio holder for sustainability, said, “I would like to thank residents of Elistoun Drive for their patience while we made sure that any works we carried out would not cause problems up or down stream.

“Thankfully, we are now able to go ahead and give these houses a certain level of protection.”

During the works parts of the mixed leisure route will be closed and information signs will be erected.

A full update on the works is available on the council website, www.clacksweb.org.uk
