THIRTEEN school crossing patrol posts are set to be cut by Clackmannanshire Council this week.

Councillors are being asked to approve plans to cut seven crossing patrols with immediate effect, with a further six due to go as posts become vacant.

The proposed cuts are due to be put before councillors on Thursday 6 November.

Already, Craigbank PTA has voiced concerns about plans to no longer have a lollipop man on patrol at Gregoran/Newtonshaw in Sauchie.

The other crossing patrols due to be cut with immediately are Stalker Avenue, Tillicoultry (Tillicoultry PS); Whins Road/Argyll Street, Alloa (Sunnyside PS); Alloa Road/South Pilmuir Road, Main Street/Kirkwynd and Alloa Road/Kirkwynd (all Clackmannan PS); and Devon Road/Kilncraigs Road, Alloa (Park PS).

The other six due to go as posts become vacant are Alloa Road/Menstrie Road, Tullibody, and Alloa/Stirling low road, Station Road, Alloa (both Abercromby PS); Stirling Street, Alva, at the crossing (Alva PS); Clackmannan Road, Alloa, at Alloa Centre (Park PS); Main Street/School Lane, Menstrie, at chemists (Menstrie PS) amd Main Street/Beechwood, Sauchie (Craigbank PS and Deerpark PS).

Thank you to the Alloa Advertiser for highlighting this story. Parents and carers of the children at Craigbank primary school who use the crossing at Greygoran / Newtonshaw in Sauchie are very angry and concerned about this because they believe it will lead to an unacceptable increase in danger to the lives of the children that use this crossing. I can only assume that parents and carers of children who use the other school crossings affected will be equally concerned. We can all only hope that the Councillors will vote against this proposal at their meeting at 9.30 this morning.

Can the Council not find the £25k savings from their budgets elsewhere ?

Why place Children in greater danger ?

There is a coach depot at Greygoran where the lollipop lady is to be removed which worries me for the safety of Craigbank children. If this goes ahead then the old County motto is prescient "Look Aboot ye" !

Where does this leave Clackmannanshire Council's "Safer routes to School" policy ?

Children need help to cross roads safely, thats why we have these lollipop people.

Safety to children crossing roads in the morning and after school will be seriously compromised if this cut goes ahead. Children’s safety should come above all else and if these school crossing patrols disappear then more parents will feel the need to drive their children to school to ensure their safety so increasing the risk to those still having to cross the road. More cars will also result in increased pollution and less exercise for the children with long term costs which would certainly outweigh the relatively small cost of paying for school crossing patrols to continue to provide this excellent public service.
