PUPILS from two Alloa schools are hoping to somersault to success, after being selected to represent Clackmannanshire in next year’s Scottish Schools Gymnastics Competition.

Teams from Sunnyside and Park Primaries were jumping for joy after securing first and second place in the Level One Primary School section of the Scottish Gymnastics Regional Schools Heats, held at Tulligarth Sports Complex last week.

Now both teams will fly the flag for the county in the final which takes place in Perth in March.

While Sunnyside’s team, including brother and sister Ronan and Neve McAleer, Jodie Currie and Mairi MacKinnon, beat off stiff competition from another 37 primary school teams to vault to pole position in their category and qualify for the next stage, Park Primary pupils Dean Whitney, Emma Crowe, Chloe Stark and Kasey Manzie scooped second place in the same category and also qualified.

Fiona Sheridan, P6 teacher at Sunnyside, told the Advertiser, “I am very proud of all of the children who took part in the heats. We did have a second team which did very well, but unfortunately they weren’t placed.

“It was quite an achievement for the other children to get a first place - they really did themselves and the school proud.”

Jennifer Roy, Physical Co-ordinator at Park Primary, added, “The kids were absolutely fantastic. They were really excited about taking part in the heats, so you can imagine how excited they were after getting through to the final.”

Final qualifiers in other sections include Craigbank and Alva Primary Schools in Primary Schools Level Two and teams from both Lornshill and Alva Academies in the Secondary Schools Level Two section.

The regional heats were organised by Clackmannanshire Council’s Sports Development Team and sponsored by the Alva Co-op.
