AN OUTSTANDING victory over league leaders Ross County has moved Alloa Athletic within touching distance of the top of the table.

But while the Wasps might now be viewed as title contenders, manager Allan Maitland is simply focusing on Saturday’s match – and is urging his side to avoid any slip ups against Cowdenbeath at Central Park.

Alloa have already taken three points from the Blue Brazil this season, winning 3-2 at Recreation Park in September, and another victory would keep the club on the tails of Ross County and Raith Rovers at the top of the Second Division.

However, Maitland warned, “I expect Cowden to give us a hard game, so we must be ready and up for the match.

“Our performance on Saturday against Ross County was excellent. Our whole team was magnificent – in fact, that was the best we have played since I arrived at the club.

“But we must show we are able to go on from that and try to pick up another three points on Saturday.”

The manager will wait for fitness reports this week on his injured players.

Midfielder Brown Ferguson could not play at the weekend because of a stomach bug but seems likely to have shaken that off.

Captain and experienced defender Derek Fleming is almost ready to come back after a knee injury while Scot Buist is close to a return from a foot injury.

Meanwhile, defender Chris Townsley enjoyed something of a family outing at Recreation Park on Saturday, and made it an extra special day by netting Alloa’s third goal and going on to pick up the man of the match award. His family were sponsors at the game – promoting their business, The Marionville Bar in the Meadowbank area of Edinburgh – and there were 15 fans and family present from the pub, as everyone could hear!

Chris had the honour of carrying his three-year-old nephew Kieran – the mascot for the day – on to the field prior to kick-off, and then turned in a display to make all his family proud.

Speaking after the match, Chris said, “Scoring the third goal rounded off a good day for me. I thought the team played very well.”
