Alloa striker Graham Brown is congratulated by his team-mates after netting one of his three goals at Cowdenbeath on Saturday.

AFTER watching his side win their ninth league game of the season on Saturday, Allan Maitland confessed he had considered fielding an unchanged team.

The Alloa manager said, “Following our win over leaders Ross County there was a temptation to keep the same secure team. But I also knew Cowdenbeath would be hard to beat at their ground so I felt it would be best to make a changer or two.”

He brought back Derek Fleming, the team captain, to add some extra stability to an already good defensive set-up and before long it proved to be the correct decision as the former Dundee and Dunfemline player showed his usual good form.

Also returning to the side was Brown Ferguson who made an important contribution to the victory in midfield where his good reading of the play helped to keep Cowdenbeath in check.

Maitland added, “Out middle four were outstanding, showing great energy. The work shown by Ferguson and Dougie Wilson got something special for us today but our defence was just outstanding. This all meant it was the best we could have hoped to play.

“Of course I was happy to see Graeme Brown score three goals on a day when he was supported well by others. The result also gave me the opportunity to bring on Andy Ferguson and Brian Fairbairn which gives them their chance in the team. There is now a great spirit at our club which goes a long way for us.”

Meanwhile, a series of bookings has caught up with young midfielder John Grant who is suspended for the next three fixtures – Berwick Rangers at the Recs on Saturday, Airdrie at New Broomfield on Boxing Day and Raith Rovers at Starks Park on Saturday 29 December.

The manager has not decided yet who comes in but Scott Agnew is the likeliest candidate. Ferguson, Joe Andrew and Fairbairn are also very much in the frame.
