THERE was good news this week for four of our promising young rugby players from this area.

With the announcement of the forthcoming annual Millbank Festival, it has been revealed that several of the local boys have been named in this Scotland Under 17 squad which will compete in the Somerset event.

Glen Bryce of Alloa and Sauchie’s Sean Kennedy will join up with Dollar Academy pair Courteney Morrison and Callum Wishart this week as the Scottish squad makes its preparations for the English Festival.

The boys have been based over the weekend at their training camp in Aberfoyle before moving to play Newcastle Falcons in a challenge game at Linlithgow.

Tomorrow (Friday) the squad concentrate more fully at their Merchiston Castle Training Camp before making the journey south to the Millband School for their final build-up..

One boy from this area who is particularly pleased to be selected in ithe Scottish squad is Sauchie’s Sean Kennedy.

The fifth year Lornshill Academy pupil, who lives in Fairmount Drive in Sauchie told the Advertiser, “When I was told that I was in the Scottish squad I was totally shocked because this will be my first Scottish honour.

“I just was not expecting it but to be honest, I am feeling pretty chuffed.”

Sean has been turning out at scrum half for the Clackmannanshire Colts and enjoying it. He said, “I have been really happy playing with the Colts but like so many others beore me, I will be joining Stirling County next season.”

Lived in Ireland

Although he was born in Stirling, Sean lived in Ireland for eight years before moving to this area and is so happy to be named in the Scottish team.

He said, “I am looking forward to joining Stirling County where there is better quality rugby at a higher level.”

When he leaves Lornshill Academy Sean has not quite decided on his career. He added, “I hope to go to university but I think I will leave my options open.”

Good luck to Scotland’s new boy – let’s hope he does well in his first outing for his country.
