The committee of the newly-launched canoe club.

WITH assistance from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, canoeing will be coming to Clackmannanshire in a big way soon.

The newly formed Clackmannanshire Canoe Club has laid the foundation for making their presence on the area’s two rivers – Devon and Forth but also have ambitious plans to bring their members to Gartmorn Dam in Sauchie which appears to be their main preference at present.

Scott Johnstone of Alloa, who is the club president and chairperson told the Advertiser, “This is really a first for our club and I am confident it will be popular around the area.

“It is basically a paddle sport which would appeal to all ages. I think that Gartmorn Dam (which is to be sold off by Scottish Water as reported in the Advertiser last week) would be ideal for us. We currently have 16 members who are all keen to get started on the rivers and dams in this area.so we have been holding meetings to help get us started.”

Scott added, “One of our main jobs was to apply to the Scottish Canoe Association for affiliation. Funding was also important so, with the help of councillor Craig Holden we were able to apply to the Coalfields Regeneration Trust who have awarded us £10,000 for equipment We will be buying this at the Stirling Canoe Club in Springkerse.

“So far we have been doing work at the Alva Academy Pool which is fine but when we get on Gartmorn Dam on Sunday 30 March it will be what we really want.

“When the weather improves we intend to make regular trips to Gartmorn and in the future be able to offer membership to everyone, which includes youngsters.

“Anyone who would like to try canoeing should contact me by telephoning 077493 26620.”

Good news comes in the form of the money provided by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust which will enable the club to obtain equipment which includes a river kayak trailer, bungee kits, paddles, kayaks, drysuits, airbags etc.

The Clackmannanshire Canoe Club management committee comprises: Scott Johnstone, Gordon McNeil, Barry Johnstone, Scott Menzies and Finlay Robertson, with more likely to join any day now.

When the sunny weather hopefully arrives soon this sport is likely to command much interest and, the committee hopes, a big increase in membership.
