Boxing's on the up at Alloa
By Jamie MacAulay
ALLOA Boxing Club had four of the club’s growing list of talented youngsters in action over the weekend at Glenrothes.
Three of these were boxing for an East of Scotland Select against former World Champion Glen McCrory’s Northumbria select.
Fighter of the night has to go to Alloa’s big punching welterweight John Whyte. John was in against cage fighter G Shone of the English select, who had only lost once in the ring and had a high KO record.
In round 1, John stuck to text book boxing skills, keeping Shone at bay. Towards the end of the round John went through the gears and delivered some punishing body shots to slow the clearly big punching Shone down.
The tactics proved effective as in round 2, when John applied the pressure, Shone found the canvas after a big right hand. But the Englishman showed great heart to get up and make the count.
John knew his opponent was hurt and at the restart, pushed him against the ropes and worked the body before unleashing the big right.
Shone again made every effort to get back to his feet, but Whyte’s clinical finishing made it impossible.
Next up for Alloa was Josh Barnes, in against an experienced England Internationalist in M Razaq.
Both lads showed fantastic skills and impressive fitness levels .
Unfortunately Josh lost out narrowly on the judges card, but showed he belongs at national level with an impressive display of punching ability.
Scott Hartley lost at heavyweight to Dunfermline’s B McKells. The big man frustrated himself and coaches as he has shown far more in the gym than he did on the night.
