Andy's late goals keep play-off hopes alive
By Iain Robertson
Striker Andy Ferguson found the net twice in the last five minutes.
Alloa Athletic 2 v 0 Ross County
TWO late Andy Ferguson goals against the Second Division champions secured three vital points for Alloa in their chase for a play-off place.
Home gaffer Allan Maitland was delighted after the game, and said, "The result was a great achievement with two games to go."
Alloa should have taken the lead after two minutes, but Kyle Macaulay hesitated in the box, and the chance was gone.
The opening exchanges were typical of an end of season game, as neither side got out of first gear.
County's first decent effort came after 11 minutes, but Adam Strachan's fierce drive went just past the right post.
The Wasps found their sting midway through the half, forcing three corners in as many minutes, but Ross managed to clear the danger.
Both teams upped the pace in the second half with County going close to opening the scoring, but David Winters shot wide with only the keeper to beat.
Fraser Forrest had a glorious chance to score for Alloa on 55 minutes, but his headed effort was straight at the County keeper.
Ray Jellema kept the home team's play-off hopes alive a minute later, with a finger tip save to deflect Michael Gardyne's effort over the bar.
Adam Coakley almost had the home fans celebrating on 64 minutes, but he headed just over from a corner.
County substitute Sean Higgins hit the post in 76 minutes from a free-kick taken just outside the box.
It looked like the game was going to finish goalless, but Andy Ferguson rose to head home in 86 minutes from a Derek Fleming cross.
Ferguson made it a brace on the full-time whistle and ensured Alloa go into their last two games sitting in the last play-off position.
