Star had taste for a victory

Star Inn 2 v 1 Oakwood
STAR Inn were crowned the Daily Record Scottish Cup winners after a 2 – 1 win over the heavily-fancied Oakwood at Beechwood Park, Sauchie on Sunday.
Conditions were near perfect, although the well-tendered pitch was somewhat heavy.
Both teams were at full strength and both fired up. Star got off to the perfect start, when with just 90 seconds played Medwik opened the scoring.
Mitchell fed the ball down the channel, which Cowan carried and sent in a precise pass to Medwik who hammered in a sweet volley from 20 yards into the top left hand corner out of the reach of Marshall.
Oakwood showed some resolve and took the game to the Star, but the Alloa defence was up to the challenge containing the ball in the centre of the park for the majority of the 1st half.
Oakwood showed their mettle and pulled level in 42 minutes when some fine work from Mackintosh and Fraser drew the Star’s defence out, Mackintosh then sent the ball across to Kerr on the edge of the six-yard box who coolly slotted it home from close range.
Half time 1 – 1
This was clearly evident when Fraser of the Oakwood and Conway of the Star collided tackling for a 50/50 ball, resulting with Conway having to make a trip to hospital, thankfully only having to receive treatment for ligament damage.
Kennedy then went close with a fine effort for the Oakwood, but the ever-present Stenhouse was a match for this effort and he guided the ball round the post with a fine save.
Star then re-took the lead, when after some fine individual play from Peddie who shimmied past two defenders on the right wing sent in an un-defendable ball into the centre of the box, which Kevin Hartley headed out of the reach of the stranded Oakwood keeper.
Oakwood pushed for an equaliser, but to no avail and after six minutes of injury time, the referee called full time and the title went to the Star Inn.
The presentation team from Diageo presented the medals to both teams and it was Jimmy Faulds for the Star Inn who went to pick the cup. Both teams are to be applauded for an excellent game of football, with Man of the Match being given to David Kerr of the Oakwood.
Scott Craig (Manager of Star) commented that it was a close run affair with both teams giving their all, although he thought the Star had the edge and was naturally delighted in getting the win.
Thanks go to Sauchie Juniors for the use of their facilities and also to the SWFA for the staging of the event .
The Star Inn FC would like to thank David Westland and Avalon Signs .
