ONE of Alloa Athletic’s brightest young stars has had his hopes dashed when on the brink of moving to try Major League Soccer in America.

Adam Coakley is only 20 but, with Scottish International experience at under 17, 18 and 19 age group already behind him, he was looking forward to moving to the States to continue his soccer career after he realised his contract at Alloa Athletic was not being renewed for the coming season.

But Adam was informed of the possible chance to be joining San Jose Earthquakes.

He told the Advertiser this week, “A friend of mine who lives in America told me before the season ended here that he had forwarded information on me to San Jose and they were interested in my future.

Permission

“I flew over to the States, trained two or three times with San Jose but then found they were struggling to get permission to play me. Their season does not end until July 15 so, even although the Scottish season is finished and I am technically a free agent here, I cannot sign for an American club just now.

“It seems there is a gap between when their season finishes and when a player can sign on for a new season.

“I was only four days into my visit over there when I found about the rule. It seems they are very strickt in America about things like that which is a major disappoiintment for me.

“But I am only 20 so perhaps I will be given the opportunity later when I am more grown up. I would love to go to America because the lifestyle would be great and I do know the weather is brilliant.”

Adam, who lives in Uddingson near Glasgow was one of Alloa’s most promising young strikers and believed to be earmarked for a longer career at Recreation Park.

However, his contract was not renewed but his future could still be rosy. He told us, “I will see what happens with the San Jose situation. Maybe I can look forward to playing in Scotland for a couple of more seasons to gain more experience then see what happens.

“If I had not been struggling to get permission to join San Jose then I could be there now but we will just have to wait for any new developments.”

Proud

Before he joined Alloa Athletic Adam played with Motherwell and Morton but his proudest moments were when he won his place in the Scotland sides.

Perhaps his future will be much brighter in this country for a short spell, then he can taste the temptations of the American Soccer Scene.
