A NIGGLING injury which troubled Alloa midfielder Brown (Bomber) Ferguson at the end of last season now seems certain to keep him from starting the new season.

Ferguson, who is in his second spell at Recreation Park, told the Advertiser, “Last season I had been feeling pain in my stomach and groin. At first I thought it was a hernia but a scan has shown the problem is a protruding disc in my back.

“At times I feel weak in certain areas and the specialists tell me the problem could possibly have started as long as 10 or 15 years ago without me knowing it."

The former Hamilton and Partick Thistle midfielder continued, “I am pretty gutted after hearing that news, which means I will not be ready to play at the start of the new season.

“I did my first training session on Saturday but did it on my own. I have been told to do a lot of exercise to strengthen my lower back, so at the moment I am doing only what I can. With an injury like this I am not prepared to take any risks until I am ready to return.

“The last thing I want is an operation on my spine in case there were any complications, so I will be doing my own training at the moment, at my own pace”.

Ferguson, a hard working creative player in the Alloa midfield, added, “The gaffer has been great when I told him and he understands my situation. I want to get back to where I should be in fitness terms and be a better player."

Speaking about the new season’s challenge he said, “I have always said that we must try to improve on last season and win the play-offs.

“We will face hard games against teams like Ayr United, new boys East Fife, Raith Rovers and Stirling Albion in what I am sure will be a competitive league.

“Promotion should be our aim with a push for a top four finish.”

Meanwhile, Dougie Wilson, who suffered from an ankle injury last season, is shaping up well during the early pre-season training.

Jinky told the Advertiser, “We have been doing lots of running for fitness and I am feeling fine so I hope there are no more ankle injuries.

“I feel Alloa should be one of the favourites to definitely go into the play-offs. We have kept most of the squad together from last season and, from what I see, our boys are looking good in training.”
