Three key players miss Challenge Cup tie
By John Simpson
ALLOA ATHLETIC will be without three of their key players when First Division side Dundee visit Recreation Park on Saturday in the opening round of the Challenge Cup.
Midfielder Dougie Wilson has been having problems with his ankle, which was treated in hospital during the close season but he has been unable to take part fully in the pre-season training.
The Tillicoultry lad sustained his injury in February last year and, after surgery at Stirling’s King’s Park Hospital, appeared to be doing well, but progress has taken longer than hoped so he has returned to see a specialist.
He told the Advertiser, “I was given a steroid injection to help the injury so I now hope to be back in full training in a couple of weeks.
“I have been doing loads of fitness work in the gym recently with Bomber so I hope this helps us both.”
Another man having problems is midfielder Brown Ferguson. Now in his second spell with Alloa Athletic, 'Bomber' found a protruding disc in his back was giving him considerable pain and because of this his pre-season work has been severely disrupted.
He said, “I will not be able to play on Saturday against Dundee because I have been doing my own training recently and at my own pace.”
Ths is a blow to the former Partick Thistle midfielder but he does not want to take any chances with this type of injury.
Also a doubtful starter for this weekend is defender Fraser Forrest who picked up a knee injury in the Oban Tournament, but he could declare himself fit before Saturday.
Defender Scott Buist will definitely be a non starter – he is suspended.
The former Oakley United player was sent off in last year’s Challenge Cup game with Arbroath so is automatically misses this game.
Allan Maitland will be urging his side to hit Dundee with everything to show why the Wasps reached the play-offs.
Kick-off at the Recs is 3pm. Admission is £12 and £6.
