NEW Alloa Athletic captain Chris Townsley is confident his team will do well as the new season begins to unfold – despite the unexpected defeat at Gayfield on Saturday.

The former Ross County defender told the Advertiser this week of his hopes for what lies ahead for the Wasps.

He said, “I feel we were really looking good in our opening games, particularly against Dundee in the cup, but we must always try to improve and go forward from that.

"Our squad, I feel, is stronger than before, but that is nothing against the players who were with us last season.

"Dougie Hill, Pat Scullion and Iain Campbell are really good additions to our squad, but getting Jamie Stevenson is a massive signing for us.

“Jamie did well in his last spells with the club and I am sure he will take us to another level this time.”

Chris is looking forward to meeting Clyde on Tuesday in the Challenge Cup but said, “I don’t think taking revenge for our meeting last season will be our thoughts – we just want to get through to the next round.

“Both their team and ours will be totally different from the play-off games and it should be remembered that we beat them at home last season. We are capable of winning again this time.”

As he looked towards the next league fixtures, Chris said, “In our home game with Ayr I would say they will be looking strong after spending quite a bit of money.

“But we must not think about what they have done and worry about ourselves, especially after our defeat from Arbroath on Saturday. Ayr have improved and I am sure they would be happy with their 0-0 draw with Raith Rovers at the weekend – they will be up there at the end of the season.”

Chris is also looking forward to the challenge from Raith Rovers which comes on 16 August when the Kirkcaldy men come to Recreaation Park.

He said, “I expect that to be a hard game for us but if we play our best then I feel we have nothing to fear.”
