Wasps sting Elgin in Cup
By Iain Robertson
Kyle Macaulay set up the opening goal.
Alloa 2 v 0 Elgin
AFTER a disastrous opening day drubbing by Arbroath, Alloa got back to winning ways in the first round of the Co-operative Cup.
Two second half goals saw the Wasps progress against a resilient Elgin City side.
The Wasps went close to opening the scoring after five minutes when Francis Kelly’s vicious shot struck the cross bar.
The opening exchanges were quite scrappy after that- not helped by the weather - and neither side looked threatening.
Things livened up mid way through the half when Elgin’s Craig Campbell came within inches of making it one-nil to the visitors.
Elgin came close again moments later when David Hind’s shot narrowly wide after Darren Shallicker and Jason Crooks carved an opening in the Alloa defence.
Alloa should have taken control of this cup-tie just after the half-hour mark, though, but Graeme Brown lobbed his shot straight at the keeper when clean through.
Elgin looked threatening on the break and moments before half-time David Shallicker was denied by a finger tip save by Alloa stalwart Ray Jellema.
The Wasps showed a lot of more urgency after the break and Brown found himself in space on the edge of the six yard box, but his curled shot was too high to trouble the Elgin keeper.
Alloa did have the ball in the net 10 minutes into the half but Dougie Hill’s effort was adjudged offside.
Allan Maitland made what proved to be an inspired double substitution on the hour mark bringing on Andy Scott and Kyle Macaulay.
The pair combined to open the scoring after 71 minutes when Scott drove home a Macaulay cutback.
Francis Kelly ended the game as a contest minutes later when he knocked in a close-range effort to secure Alloa’s position in the next round of the cup.
