TWO first half Ayr strikes sent the Wasps crashing to a second consecutive league defeat.

After the game, Alloa gaffer Allan Maitland said, “For the first 45 minutes Ayr were the better side and they scored two good goals. We were better in the second half and played better football, missing one or two chances, but we need to regroup now before Tuesday’s cup game.”

Ayr took the initiative from the first whistle and opened the scoring after four minutes when Alex Williams slotted past Ray Jellema.

The visitors pressed hard for a second and goal scorer Williams was causing plenty of problems for the Alloa defence.

It was nearly all square, though, midway through the half, but Kyle Macaulay’s long range effort found the side netting.

Chris Aitken went close to doubling Ayr’s advantage minutes later with a lobbed effort that had Jellema beaten, but it was just too high.

It was two after 38 minutes when Bryan Prunty’s angled drive beat Jellema at his right post.

Aitken came desperately close to putting Ayr further ahead five minutes into the second half when his shot came back off the post.

The honest men did have the ball in the back of the net after 65 minutes but the strike was chalked off for handling.

Alloa were stung into action after that and began to take control of the game as they went in search of goals.

Macaulay came close after 70 minutes with a dipping shot that drifted just past the right post of Stephen Grindlay .

Chris Townsley should have reduced the deficit a few minutes later when he had a free header inside the six yard box, but he bulleted his effort wide.

Alloa’s last good chance fell to Macaulay – who found himself clean through on Grindlay – but the Ayr keeper blocked well.

The Wasps now have to pick themselves up for the visit of Clyde in the Challenge Cup on Tuesday night..
