Goalkeeper Ray Jellema made some good saves but was unable to prevent the Wasps from losing out to Clyde.

ALLOA fell to their second defeat in four days as they lost out to First Division Clyde in the second round of the Alba Challenge Cup.

After watching his side make their exit from the Cup Alloa manager Allan Maitland said, "We played much better tonight than we did against Ayr United on Saturday but we lacked penetration.

"I am disappointed to lose but we did play better as a unit but, after making scoring chances, failed to hit the target.

"Unfortunately our defender Iain Campbell picked up a groin injury so he is out for the Raith Rovers match on Saturday.”

The first half was a drab affair, with neither side producing any great football in the rainy conditions.

Jamie Stevenson had the first real chance of the match when he was clean through on the keeper after 19 minutes but he dragged his effort wide.

Clyde’s best effort of the first 45 came after 28 minutes when German Michael Ohnesorge’s free kick came back off the post.

The second half started brightly and Alloa nearly opened the scoring, but Kyle Macaulay just failed to get his foot on a Stevenson cross.

It was John Brown’s men who took the lead, though - 15 minutes in - when Pat Clarke shot high into the net from close range.

Alloa nearly equalised minutes later when Chris Townsley got his head on a Stevenson cross but his effort came back off the bar.

The Wasps continued to search for a leveller with Jamie Stevenson and John Grant both going close.

As the game progressed Clyde’s superior fitness began to tell and Billy Gibson blasted their second after 76 minutes.

Ray Jellema prevented Alloa from going further behind when he got a finger tip to Ohnesorge’s free kick.

The last effort of the match fell to Alloa’s Grant who saw his shot parried by the Clyde stopper.

It’s back to league business on Saturday for the Wasps when they will look to pick up their first points of the season against Raith Rovers at the Recs.
