THE new season looks promising for the first girls’ football team in Clackmannanshire.
More and more eager players are joining in training sessions and thanks to some help from local businesses they have raised the cash needed to cover insurance costs and fees to the Scottish Football Association.
The girls’ football sessions were previously organised by Clackmannanshire Council but, as it has grown, they have become a team in their own right with a little help from Alloa Athletic Football Club – who will provide them with kit and access to the pitch at Recreation Park.
Katy Mulraney, girls’ team coach, told the Advertiser, “We are getting there, we have around 50 girls coming along just now and we’re hoping to get that number up to 100.
“They are loving it and the 5-9 year-old group is growing the fastest. The wee ones are coming along in all weathers, as are the older ones. Everything is going well – we didn’t think it would be successful so soon.”
The team is progressing each week although the older girls are still slightly short of players to make a squad.
However, Katy hopes that a few more will join to help them field a team.
She said, “We have around 15 girls for the older team but we are waiting until October or November to arrange games as there have been a few off on their holidays. Once they are back we will be arranging friendlies.”
Katy added, “They are getting better every single week and since we have started training at the same time as the boys they have been able to see what they are aiming for. They have really come on.”
The team has recently acquired a new coach and Katy hopes they can still attract another coach to help with the team.
