THE lack of a cutting edge meant Alloa returned empty-handed from Peterhead on Saturday.
It was a frustrating afternoon for the Wasps, especially since the home side were not particularly dangerous throughout a sometimes dull affair.
However, the Blue Toon did make the perfect start with Stuart Anderson driving past Ray Jellema with the help of a deflection off defender Iain Campbell in only six minutes.
Jamie Stevenson’s hit a shot which tested goalkeeper after 12 minutes, and then curled the ball just over the bar from 20 yards with another effort.
Stevenson featured again as he set up Pat Scullion, but the midfielder shot over the top.
Stuart McKay then nearly added a second goal for the home side with a well directed header but Ray Jellema dived to push the ball for a corner.
A saving tackle by Chris Townsley denied goalscorer Anderson a chance to double his tally, and Iain Campbell did well to head clear a dangerous cross into the Alloa box.
In the second half, Grant’s strong shot struck home captain Bobby Mann in front of goal and Graeme Brown, too often lacking support, tried to get to a Stevenson cross but McDonald headed to safety.
Macaulay then shot wide of the post from Stevenson’s cross, and Scullion blasted over as the Wasps tried to take something from the game.
However, a late free kick by Stevenson summed up Alloa's disappointing afternoon, with his shot troubling the seagulls more than the goalkeeper!
