King of Clubs
By Narin Bahar
Crazy golf is one of those games that defies logic. Unashamedly tacky, and reliant so often on blind luck rather than any kind of skill, it should be more irritating than entertaining, and yet it remains a stalwart of family fun.
Despite its faults, King of Clubs manages to do pretty much the same thing - in an entirely pixellated form. Setting itself up as less of a sports sim more of a party game, King of Clubs can be entertaining but occasionally rather annoying. The graphics let it down, and it felt laggy while I was playing it, but if you can get beyond that this is a fun enough way to while away some time.
The cheese factor comes from Big Bubba, the titular King of Clubs who oversees holes themed on lots of kitsch fun - from Egyptian pyramids to science fiction style alien landscapes and lots more in between. With clubs and balls ranging from the usual to more entertainingly helpful - including a 'sticky' ball which just stops where it lands which is great for some of the more fiddly courses - there's a lot more to this than Tiger Woods.
There are almost 100 hole to work through, with a plethora of unlockable skills and equipment to help with the more fiendishly difficult ones. For anyone who's been driven mad by the golf on Wii Sports, the swing functionality using the Wii remote is refreshingly easy here making this worth picking up for something different from the usual party game Wii fare.
The multiplayer is the most fun - with the ability to use your remote to send sounds to your opponents to put them off as they line up a shot proving to be ridiculously entertaining for players who probably should be old enough to know better.
Three stars.
* King of Clubs is out on the Wii now.
