PEOPLE from across the UK are continuing to put their names on the Advertiser petition calling for the Government to ban looped blind cords.

This week the issue is expected to be raised at Midlothian Council, and Edinburgh City Council has also declared an interest.

Local MP Gordon Banks raised the issue on the floor of the Commons and the UK Government revealed plans for a new European-wide manufacturing standard for blind cords.

However, it is unlikely that looped cords will be completely ruled out from the new design standard - instead safety features will be issued.

Mr Banks has been invited to view the amendments due in July to assess whether these new proposals go far enough but is adamant that 'a complete re-design of blind mechanisms' is needed.

Among those that have added their names and comments are Paul Liddiatt-Browning, of Bristol.

He wrote, 'This is not the first incident of this kind I have heard about. Something must be done to stop any more tragedies like this happening in the future.'

Elizabeth Hanlon, of Bathgate, said, 'Please ban these types of cord - they are completely unnecessary.'

And Maureen Gilmour, of Glasgow, wrote, 'My cousin"s husband lost his youngest brother the same way and that was over 10 years ago. They petitioned the government at that time without much success. I hope they listen this time.'
