April marks the second anniversary of the NHS Dental Contracts, which were introduced to give people easier access to an NHS dentist. But the reality is that for many people, these contracts have made it more difficult.
Recent figures have shown that 500,000 people across England have lost access to an NHS dentist since the changes in 2006. For a lot of people seeing a private dentist is now the only option. That means charges may be higher, so it's worth considering dental plans, like those from HSA, where you can spread the cost of your care, whether it's on the NHS or private.
To coincide with this anniversary, the results of the Dental Survey 2008 are being released. The research provides a snapshot of the state of dentistry in the UK today looking at cost, quality of treatment and access – and will hopefully encourage us all to listen to our health conscience and do the best by our teeth in 2008.
