Every pupil in primaries one, two and three is now entitled to a free school meal in a £95m initiative, announced the Scottish Government.

According to Holyrood the policy, affecting 135,000 children around the country, will benefit families with each household looking at saving at least £330 a year.

Clackmannanshire councillor and education convener Ellen Forson (SNP) welcomed the news. She told the Advertiser: “I am delighted that 1814 P1-P3 pupils across Clackmannanshire are now entitled to a free school meal. This is a major step forward – and is a policy which will benefit pupils and their families alike.” Councillor Forson said that a better, healthier diet could help the youngsters achieve more behind their school desks. She said: “A healthy school meal everyday has an important part to play in improving the well-being of school children and ensuring the youngest pupils in our schools have access to healthy and nutritious lunches can also play an important role in improving attainment and helping pupils to achieve their best in class.” She also talked about the benefits the policy will bring to families across the Wee County and beyond.

The councillor added: “As well as helping our children to be healthier and achieve more in school, this policy will also provide a real boost to family budgets in tough financial times – with families saving around £300 per year for every eligible child.” While many hailed the policy across Scotland, Scottish Labour said the policy will only benefit wealthier families, as those from deprived backgrounds already qualified for free meals.
