POLICE are to begin issuing fixed penalty notices to motorists who ignore parking regulations outside Redwell Primary School.

Officers say they have been contacted by a number of parents who are concerned for the safety of youngsters outside the school.

Claims that many road users ignore the parking regulations on site have been made along with some accusations of careless and unsafe driving.

However, police say they will monitor the situation and those found to be in contravention of the parking measures will be issued with on-the-spot fines.

In a statement issued on the Forth Valley Police Facebook page, a spokesperson said: “Recently we have been made aware of parking issues at Redwell Primary School in Alloa whereby parents and guardians are dropping their kids off and paying no attention to the parking restrictions that are in place.

“These include parking on double yellow lines, double parking and obstructing the driveways of local residents.

“Local officers have been monitoring this and will continue to do so over the next few days to ensure the relevant advice is given and thereafter, if it continues, fixed penalty tickets will be issued to those committing any such offences.”

Some parents have welcomed police intervention but warned on social media that many road users will be undeterred.

Yvonne McGillivray said: “Can we now have answers as to what will be done to all of our schools to solve this problem; as I have said the minute the police aren’t there the problem returns and I have seen this every time over many years.”

Another parent going by the name of Starsky Dunsmore, raised the issue of speeding on the road and a lack of adequate parking arrangements near to the school.

He said: “I think another more worrying and pressing issue is the fact that people driving that road do not stick to the 20 mph limit whilst children are being dropped off.

“Drivers have been seen overtaking other cars on that road during the school drop off doing well over the designated limit.

“I hope it never happens, but I feel that it will only be a matter of time before there is a major accident on this road due to speeding drivers.” The issue of school parking is echoed in other schools in the area such as Banchory Primary School in Tullibody.

A spokesperson for Clackmannanshire Council said they were aware that some road users were failing to obey the Redwell parking restrictions.

She said: “The introduction of the 20mph zone and the restrictions on parking at busy times were also introduced as part of the plan, to ensure the safety of the school community.

“The council and Police Scotland have monitored this, and are pleased that the vast majority of road users are following the rules.

“Unfortunately, a small number of road users are continuing to park inconsiderately and dangerously, and are breaking the law.”
