PROVOST Tina Murphy marked the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau on Holocaust Memorial Day last Tuesday (27 January) by lighting a candle.
Since 2001, on 27 January the survivors of the Nazi Persecution and the victims of all genocides are honoured and this year also marks the 20th anniversary of the Serbenica, Bosnia wholesale massacre.
Provost Tina Murphy said: “This year’s Holocaust Memorial Day takes Keep the Memory Alive as its theme, and ensures that survivors’ experiences are not lost to history, and that a new generation can engage with these important personal recollections of genocide.
“On this day, we learn from those who have experienced oppression during the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides. We each have an individual responsibility to ensure that differences are respected, and we can all contribute towards creating a safer, better future.”
